Research Suggests Coffee May Be Beneficial

Drinking coffee may be good for your health, U.S. researchers say.


Researchers say a cup of java might protect against diabetes, liver cancer, cirrhosis and Parkinson's disease, The Boston Globe reported Monday.


"Coffee was seen as very unhealthy," said Rob van Dam, a coffee researcher and epidemiologist at the Harvard School of Public Health. "Now we have a more balanced view. We're not telling people to drink it for health. But it is a good beverage choice."


Terry Graham, chair of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Guelph in Canada noted that coffee and caffeine are not the same thing.

Research News: Possible Link Between HPV and Skin Cancer

Researchers from Dartmouth Medical School believe they have uncovered a link between HPV and a higher risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma, the second most common form of skin cancer.


While the correlation piqued researchers' interest, it's too early, they say, to make blanket statements about whether HPV leads to or causes skin cancer (and it certainly doesn't in every case). Instead, they call for more research to get to the bottom of all of this.

Oatmeal Is Great Diet Food

You might remember those commercials touting oatmeal to lower cholesterol levels. Now it seems the mighty but little oat is a good diet food as well.


Researchers at the New York Obesity Research Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center suggest eating oatmeal for breakfast can help with weight control by curbing your appetite at lunch. The study, conducted by Dr. Allan Geliebter and colleagues, validates the old saying that oatmeal "sticks to your ribs."


In fact, the researchers say oatmeal fiber does slow down the rate at which your stomach empties out, which means you feel full longer. They say two study groups -- one lean and one overweight -- were each given a breakfast of either 350 calories of oatmeal, 350 calories of sugared corn flakes or water as a control.

One cause may be inadequate acid in the stomach, which in turn means food containing the nutrients is not properly digested. Briffa suggests a simple home test to determine if this is the case: Dissolve a teaspoonful of bicarbonate of sodium in water and drink it on an empty stomach, and wait 10 minutes or so.


Normal quantities of stomach acid will react with the bicarb to produce gas -- and bloating and belching. But little or no belching would indicate a low acid, whereon the doctor says an adjustment in your diet to improve your digestion is in order.

In the end, those assigned to a low-fat diet had the same rates of breast cancer, colon cancer, heart attacks and strokes as those who ate whatever they pleased, researchers reported recently. "These studies are revolutionary," said Dr. Jules Hirsch, physician in chief emeritus at Rockefeller University in New York City, who has spent a lifetime studying the effects of diets on weight and health. "They should put a stop to this era of thinking that we have all the information we need to change the whole national diet and make everybody healthy."

Hip Fractures and Breast Cancer Linked

A U.S. physician reports seeing hip fractures -- rare in people age 70 and under -- in breast cancer survivors in their 50s.


Lead author Dr. Beatrice Edwards of Chicago's Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine links the increase in premature fractures to some breast cancer treatment drugs. Edwards says the study involved six breast cancer survivors with hip fractures and she was surprised most of the study patients did not have osteoporosis, but lowered bone mineral density called osteopenia.


Rapid bone changes due to early menopause and drug therapies may not be visible in a bone mineral density test, Edwards cautions.

Hip Arthritis: Resurfacing vs. Replacement

QUESTION: Is there a benefit to hip resurfacing instead of hip replacement in surgery for painful hip arthritis?

The operation requires a larger incision, more muscle and tendon dissection, likely greater blood loss (increasing the chance of a need for blood transfusions), and a longer period of rehabilitation. Minimal incision, muscle sparing, uncemented total hip replacement with state-of-the-art bearing surface materials remains the gold-standard treatment for painful, disabling hip arthritis for the vast majority of patients.

You could call it potty parity, because that's what a group behind a new proposed law is after. Guys can buzz in and pee in a long line of urinals--or urinal stations, whatever you call them (what do you call them?)--while gals have to wait in long lines for one, maybe two stalls. Fair? I say not!

*Cabbage Patch Kids: Well, I guess I actually didn't collect them, but I had six and I loved them so much. There were five girls and a boy, named Leland. I think I still have his "birth certificate" in a box from childhood somewhere.


*Rocks: I used to love my rock collection, until my younger brother decided to bury it (he went through a pirate phase when he was into burying "treasure"--only problem was this: He buried my rock collection in the yard and then forgot where he buried it. To this day, it is still lost.)

It can sometimes seem like what's bad just keeps getting worse, but that may not be the case for MRSA, at least in hospital settings. The CDC reports that the superbug may be on the decline. Great news for all of us, and me, as I have a hospital stay coming up ...


The antibiotic-resistant microbe called MRSA was once believed to be running rampant in hospitals. And while it's still a concerns, the CDC recently reported that infection rates from hospital-acquired MRSA are down 28 percent.


"We are encouraged by the findings," said CDC's Dr. Alexander Kallen, whose study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Our way of life in Kansas City does not promote a healthy life style. Our city like most cities, being spread over many square miles, does not result in practical walking. Being too busy with our work schedule also keeps us from a healthy life style. And the food we choose to eat is also more likely not a healthy choice.


Cities changed after the end of World War II. People moved their homes to the suburbs in their new cars and on new streets. Walking to work was out, and driving to work was in. No more daily walking trips to the market, we now have weekly driving trips to the grocery store. Suburban life style is very popular and not going away anytime soon. Planned exercise for fitness now has to be included into our life style.
